Istituto Comprensivo Don Raffelli is a state school that educates pupils aged 3 to 13. It includes several different schools (1 Nursery School; 2 Primary Schools; 1 Middle School), that are part of Provaglio d’Iseo education system and located in two small towns, close to each another. At present we have750 pupils. Provaglio d’Iseo is in the north of Italy, on lake Iseo, in the Province of Brescia, not far from Milan.
Pupils study English from age 6 and Spanish from age 11. A specific teachers’ committee manages and coordinates the actions for the development of language skills and of an international curriculum in all our different schools. We are a Trinity College London registered exam centre and host exams for language qualifications (grades A1-A2.2). We also have several projects that aim to increase students’ English communication skills through both curricular and extra-curricular activities.
The language teaching staff are highly motivated and willing to take part in an international school network. We are now part of a network of schools in Brescia that focuses its activity mainly on the CLIL approach.
Every year we host an undergraduate student from Oxford University, who works as a language teaching assistant in our schools. It’s a great chance for our students to acknowledge the importance of English as a communicative language, work on their understanding and communicative skills and learn different aspects of the English culture.
We also have projects that engage students in drama and conversation activities with professional actors, and we host a week-long English summer camp.
We have a specific language policy and plan to give our curriculum an international and intercultural dimension through different projects and activities.
We would like to share resources, activities and good practices in language teaching. We would also like to find support in the continuous development of our staff in English and Spanish languages and cultures. We are interested in promoting an international atmosphere to increase our students’ motivation.
